Solar Panels

According to Energy.gov Solar PV systems installed in 2020 and 2021 are eligible for a 26% tax credit. In August 2022, Congress passed an extension of the ITC, raising it to 30% for the installation of which was between 2022-2032. (Systems installed on or before December 31, 2019 were also eligible for a 30% tax credit.) It will decrease to 26% for systems installed in 2033 and to 22% for systems installed in 2034. The tax credit expires starting in 2035 unless Congress renews it. There is no maximum dollar amount that can be claimed.

Beware of the gimmicks promoted by door knocking solar sales people, this tax credit is not an automatic tax refund into your pocket.  Consult your tax professional / Certified Public Accountant to determine if this helps your personal tax situation.

A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the amount of income tax you would otherwise owe. For example, claiming a $1,000 federal tax credit reduces your federal income taxes due by $1,000. The federal tax credit is sometimes referred to as an Investment Tax Credit, or ITC, though is different from the ITC offered to businesses that own solar systems.

Central Florida Electrician does not currently offer any financing solutions for solar installations.  We only offer solutions for customers with a ‘forever home’, with a roof less than 3 years old that have the available cash to pay for the installation without financing.  This type of customer can realize the return on investment in a reasonable time frame, while financed customers would be paying for 20+ years before finding their return on investment.

Solar panel cleaning, removal and replacement

According to Energy.gov, cleaning solar panels can significantly improve their performance by reducing energy loss from dirt buildup, with some studies showing an average increase in energy production of around 3.5% after cleaning, although the exact impact depends on location and environmental factors like dust levels.

When having a roof replaced you will need to have your panels removed and then reinstalled after the roof work has been completed.  This should be performed by a licensed and insured company qualified to do this work.

Frequent
Questions

How much does it cost to clean solar panels?

a minimum of $150 but typically $15-$20 per panel.  2 story roofs or dangerous roof pitch could cost more.

It’s not recommended. Fall protection should be utilized as this work is very dangerous.  Certain soaps should not be used to avoid residue or haze on the panels.

Yes batteries are a good option for backup power to your home.  Sizing the battery takes into account the size of your home and the current draw of your devices & appliances.  Solar install can be justified by the return on investment over time.  The batteries, however, should be looked at in comparison to a permanent home generator and not an ROI type investment.

At Central Florida Electrician we recognize the value of ‘free energy from the sun’ but we also admit that the financing part of the equation makes it difficult to ever see a return on your investment.  In our educated position, we feel that a cash purchase of solar installation is the best way to take advantage of solar energy.
